A Cardross newsagent has gone full circle with a son taking on the business 25 years on from his father’s death.
Adil Saleem, 37, has taken over the village’s Star News, a business which had been operating under the Ali and Nasim families until earlier this year.
The shop was rented out to the family following Mr Saleem’s passing. They took the decision to step back from the business in July due to “increasingly tough trading conditions”.
Adil, from Renfrew, has now returned to the shop where he holds many dear memories.
He said: “After a number of years, we’re back. Coming back, I still see some of the same faces that I did when I was a child, but I’m hoping to get some new faces in as well.
“This isn’t really a business venture for myself, it’s more of a personal thing for me. I have memories here from back in the day.
“I remember I got suspended from primary school once and as punishment my dad used to bring me to the shop every day.
“After that, I kid you not, I never got into trouble again – I didn’t want dragged out of my bed at half five in the morning again.”
The shop has been refurbished inside, with new floors and shelves installed and a new layout adopted. A card terminal has also been added, as well as a Jack’s Beans coffee machine.
A range of local meats from a Helensburgh-based butcher are now on offer in the store too, including steak pies, chicken pies, bacon, steak slices, and fresh ready meals.
Fresh sandwiches and filled rolls will be introduced to the store in the near future.
Adil also runs a successful business in Shawlands in the southside of Glasgow. Figo’s, a peri peri takeaway on Kilmarnock Road, opened in 2019.
Adil added: “We won the award for the best peri peri takeaway in Scotland a few months ago.
“I’ve got a great business partner, Hami Iqbal, there and plenty of good staff, so I’ve left them to it and I’ve come back to Cardross to run the village store.”
Star News is open from 7am-6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Customers are welcome to visit the shop to order their newspapers.
