A Rhu musician has hailed the town’s generosity after raising a noteworthy £1230 to send medical supplies to Ukraine.
Louise Burnet hosted a community sing along led by her weekly ukulele group ‘Rhukulele’ at Rhu Community Hall on Friday, April 1.
The Sing for Ukraine event struck a chord with locals whose kind donations will help fund medical equipment and supplies including bandages, pain killers and antibiotics which will be transported to Eastern Ukraine by an armoured truck.
Louise said: “I think we’re all being affected by the Ukraine war; we’re all deeply saddened by it, so it’s nice to feel you’re doing something to help.”
She added: “I am so proud of the Rhu community for coming out to support such a deserving cause.”
The atmosphere on the day was upbeat with guests receiving song sheets featuring 60s, 70s and 80s music upon arrival and enjoying home-baking, tea and coffee.
West Scotland MSP Pam Gosal attended the sing-along, taking the opportunity to speak with locals about their concerns surrounding the long-term impacts of the war and the need to help refugees resettle safely.
Ms Gosal said: “It was a privilege to attend such a wonderful afternoon. The turnout was huge and it goes to show just how caring and considerate the people of Rhu are for organising an event of this calibre.
"I was very impressed by the skills of the ukulele players.”
