Pupils at John Logie Baird Primary School in Helensburgh have inspired their classmates, teachers, staff and family members to join them in a mammoth sponsored walk to help those fleeing the war in Ukraine.
The school’s Primary 5 class (right) came up with the idea of challenging the whole school community to walk a combined total of 1,728 miles – the same as the distance from Kyiv to Helensburgh – in a bid to raise money for those in need.
The efforts of young people and adults alike saw more than £1,500 raised for the emergency appeal set up to help those seeking safety following Russia’s invasion.
A school spokesperson said: “Like many of us, Primary 5 has been moved by the recent events in Ukraine.
“They have been particularly shocked to hear about the long, arduous journeys so many people have had to endure in a bid to reach safety.
“As a result, the children wanted to see our school leap into action to raise money to help Ukrainian people. Together they planned a sponsored event, challenging our school community to a team effort to walk the 1,728 miles from Kyiv to Helensburgh.
“All classes have enjoyed walking together, encouraging each other, tallying up miles and doing what they can to contribute to the total mileage.
“Primary 5 has provided classes with daily updates on the number of miles covered so far, strengthening the classes’ determination to succeed.
“The children were excited to have had their parents/carers join them on their walk this week.
“Many thanks to everyone who supported this event or sponsored the children so far - we are very proud of our pupils’ determination to make a difference for those in need.”
