THE official opening of an “invaluable” community facility in Helensburgh has been celebrated this week.
A launch event at the Helensburgh Community Hub took place on Wednesday - as the Advertiser went to press - with those involved in the project to transform the former Red Cross building marking one year since it was taken into community ownership.
The East Princes Street hall was saved from closure in 2020 and has since been refurbished, ensuring a number of community groups - including the area’s food bank, a recently launched youth club and a weekly book sale - have a regular meeting place in the centre of the town.
Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O’Hara, who supported the community takeover of the hall, said he was delighted the vision of creating a true community hub for Helensburgh had been realised.
Congratulating all of those involved for their hard work, Mr O’Hara said: “It is fantastic to see the Hub now open and bringing the community together.
“This is so important, especially now when we are still facing the challenges of Covid, but with the right support networks in the same place, including Helensburgh and Lomond Foodbank, Key Housing, Argyll and Bute Rape Crises, Red Cross Mobility Aids and We Are With You, as well as providing space for local groups to meet and volunteering opportunities, the Hub will be invaluable to so many people.”

The town’s MSP, Jackie Baillie, said: “I am delighted that the Helensburgh Community Hub is celebrating its official opening.
“This hub is at the heart of the local community and provides vital support.
“I know that many local people rely on it – whether it’s the food bank or the meeting spaces that it provides for the many local community groups.
“I wish the hub all the best and look forward to being a regular visitor.”
We’ll have more on the hub’s official launch day in next week’s Advertiser.
