HELENSBURGH'S annual fireworks display has been cancelled for the second year running.
Organisers confirmed the news in a social media update today (Thursday), stating that they "have been left with no option but to cancel".
Earlier on Thursday councillors in neighbouring West Dunbartonshire decided to pull the plug on the display in Levengrove Park, stating that continuing with the events under the new Covid guidance would require significant additional planning, stewarding, security fencing and higher costs.
Concerns were also raised that due to firework shortages the actual displays may not meet the same high standards of previous years.
A similar event in Dalmuir Park was also cancelled, while the 2021 Bonfire Night celebration at Glasgow Green was scrapped earlier this month.
A post shared on the Helensburgh and District Round Table's Facebook page said: "We are gutted to announce we have been left with no option but to cancel our annual community fireworks display for the second year running.
"This is following on from neighbouring West Dunbartonshire Council and Glasgow City Council both cancelling their displays.
"As well as guidelines regarding Covid passports in relation to outdoor events, there is also the issue of the new swimming pool being built at the pier, which is encroaching on the safe distance should we utilise the pier for setting the fireworks off again, and also not allowing a safe zone for the crowds.
"We hope to be able to provide you with a display in 2022, and with this in mind we'd ask if anyone wishes to become a member of Helensburgh Round Table to assist with the preparation of this and our other events, please do feel free to drop us a message.
"See you all for the Santa Dash!"
