POLICE officers in Helensburgh are appealing for the help of the public as they investigate a report of a dangerous driving incident in the town in which a cyclist was seen on camera almost being hit head-on by a car.
According to the police, the incident happened on Wednesday, August 25 at 4.45pm at the north end of Sinclair Street, next to the town’s reservoir.
A cyclist was reportedly harassed by the driver of a red Volvo XC, who was continually sounding his vehicle’s horn while driving very close to the rear of the bike.
Police say the Volvo driver – whose actions were captured on camera – was unable to overtake the cyclist because of the volume of traffic at the time, and that the car was then seen swerving his vehicle on to the adjacent cycle path in an attempt to ‘undertake’ the cyclist.
At this point, camera footage reportedly spotted a cyclist travelling on the cycle path, in the opposite direction to the Volvo, who police say was nearly struck head on by the car.
A crime report has been raised for dangerous driving, and police say they are now following a positive line of enquiry into the incident.
However, officers in Helensburgh are also appealing for witnesses – including the cyclist who was travelling towards the Volvo – to call 101 and ask for PC Brown at Helensburgh police office.
