A TESTER event is to be held at the end of this month for a planned series of live, outdoor music and dance performances in Helensburgh.
A host of local musicians and performers have signed up to take part in the one day festival, which will run in conjunction with the Market in the Square on Saturday, August 28.
The Colquhoun Square showpiece, dubbed Summer in the Square, was initially proposed by Helensburgh Community Council (HCC) and reported in the Advertiser last month.
Since then, members Tariq Durrani, Roger Ferdinand and Nigel Millar have progressed the idea and several local performers are set to take to the stage for the first event in a fortnight.
From ceilidh bands, to free-form dance troupes and a classical choir, an eclectic mix of acts is lined up, including Tartan Harmony, the Faslane-based Neptune Band, bagpiper Mark Morrison and the Colquhoun Pipe Band, Donna Hicks’ Matinee at the Musicals, and young dancers from local councillor Gemma Penfold’s dance school.
Mr Durrani said: “We have a really nice mix of people coming, and everyone will be performing free of charge.

“This tester event is as much an exercise for us as it is for the performers. We will see how it goes and if it works out then maybe a more substantial programme can be held next year.
“A lot of the performers have been cooked up at home for many months so it is an opportunity for them to get back out there.”
Following the Advertiser’s original article in July, HCC members said they have been “really impressed by the response from the community” from interested parties keen to get involved.
Mr Durrani added: “We definitely want to hear from other performers, although the schedule for the first event is pretty much fixed now.
“Our hope is that this becomes a regular feature for entertainment in the town.
“There is a lot of talent in the town and this will help to get that talent out there.”
The first event is scheduled for 10am until around 2.30pm on Saturday, August 28.
