THE organisers of the annual Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games have cancelled the event for a second year running.

The Helensburgh event's committee decided that the ongoing uncertainty over what Covid restrictions might be in place by the date of the event had left them with no choice.

The news comes days after the organisers of the Rosneath Highland Gathering took a similar decision to pull the plug on their 2021 event.

David Park, from the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games’ organising committee, told the Advertiser: “We’ve had to cancel because of the restrictions. We just wouldn’t see the same footfall coming through.

“We’re disappointed, but it’s just the way things are with this pandemic.

“But we’re gearing up for next year, 2022, and we’re looking forward to everyone coming back.”

The Rosneath Highland Gathering’s organisers said in their statement last week: “Due to the current circumstances and continuing uncertainty of Covid-19 this year, it is with much regret that the committee have decided to cancel this year’s Games.”

Evelyn Smith, secretary and treasurer added to that statement when she told the Advertiser: “It’s the uncertainty and the unknowing, we want everyone to be safe.”

The organisers of the Helensburgh and Lomond area's third Highland Games, in Luss, were contacted by the Advertiser, but had yet to confirm the status of their event as this article was published.
