THE number of carriages on train services going to and from Helensburgh in the run-up to Christmas will be increased, ScotRail has confirmed.
The announcement comes after many ScotRail services had reduced carriage numbers from six to three carriages across Scotland, citing passenger demand as a reason for the reduction.
But it has now been confirmed that from December 13, carriage services on the popular train route that runs from Helensburgh through West Dunbartonshire to Glasgow have been returned to normal.
A ScotRail spokesperson said: “We reduced the number of carriages in response to an 85 per cent fall in the number of passengers travelling across our routes because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“However, following customer and staff feedback, and the change in lockdown restrictions, we have reinstated carriages to services between Helensburgh Central, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
“The safety of our staff and customers is our priority. We’re asking everyone to play their part, follow our five rules for safer travel, including the wearing of a face covering and maintaining physical distancing on trains and at stations, and keep each other safe.”
Helensburgh's MSP Jackie Baillie commented: “I am delighted that ScotRail have taken on board my concerns and those of the many local people who rely on train travel to get about.
“I understand that fewer people are taking the train at the moment but the vital need to keep two metres apart wherever possible means that it is more important than ever to have six carriages on all services.
“This increase will come as reassurance to everyone who will be travelling by train during the relaxation of restrictions between December 23 and 27.
“I will continue to ensure that ScotRail does everything in its power to provide a reliable local service and to keep passengers safe.”
