A DRIVER who was “considerably above the legal alcohol limit” was arrested in Garelochhead after being caught allegedly speeding past Faslane naval base.

Police received a call on Sunday night, October 27, from staff at a Helensburgh bar concerned about a male who had been within the premises and was allegedly spotted driving off later on in a white van.

Officers attended the area to search for the vehicle and a lookout was broadcast to surrounding areas.

Around 11pm, Ministry of Defence Police reportedly saw the van being driven at high speed past HMNB Clyde, and followed the vehicle before stopping the driver as he exited on the B833 in Garelochhead.

Helensburgh police then attended and the driver, a 25-year-old Dutch male, failed a roadside breath test with his sample showing a level of alcohol considerably above the legal limit, according to police.

The man was arrested and taken to Clydebank Police Office where, officers say, further samples of breath again confirmed excess alcohol levels.

He was held in custody to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court.
