HELENSBURGH'S MSP says her party made a “fundamental mistake” with its strategy and message in the European Parliament election campaign.
Labour trailed in a distant sixth place in Argyll and Bute with just 1,197 votes as the party finished up with no MEPs in Scotland and only 10 across the UK as a whole.

Jackie Baillie MSP told the Advertiser: “There is no doubt that the results of the European Parliament election are disappointing for the Labour Party right across the country and it is no different in Scotland.
“This is the worst election result for the party since 1910 and we have now lost the UK’s longest serving MEP, David Martin. I want to pay tribute to his significant contribution across the years."

Labour did finish in second place, behind the SNP, in neighbouring West Dunbartonshire, but across Scotland as a whole the party was relegated to fifth place behind the SNP, the Brexit Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives and the Greens.
Scotland returned three SNP MEPs – one more than in the last European Parliament election five years ago – while the Brexit Party, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats received one MEP apiece under the proportional voting system.

Ms Baillie continued: “It is critical that the party now reflects on this result and seriously considers what action we have to take to install trust in Labour again.
“The strategy and political message were clearly wrong and didn’t reflect the views held by party members locally. That was a fundamental mistake."
