WORK is set to get under way on the construction of a new pontoon on Loch Long in Arrochar which could provide a significant boost to tourism in the area.

A floating platform and two visitor moorings will be installed at the head of the loch with the project due to be completed in time for the summer season.

The Loch Long Jetty Association in charge of the development received an £84,000 grant in October last year to support the plans.

The money was awarded by the Garfield Weston Foundation, whose director Philippa Charles admitted to being impressed by the potential for community-led initiatives and volunteering events which could be possible through the provision of the new facilities, as well as the benefit to small businesses in the village.

Dawn Gourlay, secretary of the Loch Long Jetty Association, said: "We are anticipating work starting on this imminently and anticipate the pontoon being in site by the end of May or beginning of June, albeit a bit weather dependent.

"We are now turning our attention to our official opening which is planned for Saturday, July 27 at 4pm."

Commenting in 2018 after the most recent grant funding announcement, Dawn said: "Arrochar is situated in a beautiful location at the head of Loch Long, surrounded by the picturesque Arrochar Alps, and is located on the main trunk roads to the west of Scotland and the Western Isles.

“Many private yachts and chartered vessels sail up Loch Long every year, but with no pontoon or visitor moorings they are currently unable to safely moor and come ashore, to visit the village and explore the surrounding area.

“By providing these facilities it will also allow us to hold community-led initiatives such as an annual triathlon and raft race, which will help to enhance community spirit and benefit small businesses in the village.”
