NEWS that a leading health charity has made a new investment of over £170,000 in research into multiple sclerosis (MS) in Scotland has been welcomed by a local group.

Sheena Rollo from the MS Society Dumbarton and District said Scotland had one of the highest rates of MS in the world, so they were delighted the society is continuing to invest in research into the condition in Scotland.

An estimated 11,000 people currently live with the condition across the country.

The Scotland-based research projects will focus on discovering more about the causes of fatigue in people with MS and finding drugs that can speed up the repair of myelin – the protective coating around nerves which is damaged by MS.

Sheena said: “Finding new treatments and understanding the condition better are vital in ensuring that people with MS, including hundreds in the Dumbarton and district area covering all of West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute, can live their lives as independently and as fully as possible.”
