A DISUSED railway station could be revived to ease traffic problems at Faslane, according to a report.
A report being submitted to Rhu and Shandon Community Council states that a study is under way between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Argyll and Bute Council to examine whether opening an old station platform near the base could be feasible.
An additional entrance to Faslane is due to become available for cars, and the cycle path from Helensburgh may also be revised in a bid to beat the regular traffic queues on the A814 road.
The document, by MoD representative John Livesey, will be considered by the community council on December 12.
Mr Livesey said: “Talks are ongoing with Argyll and Bute to determine whether opening a train station or stop at the north gate could be safely achieved.
“There is a defunct platform there which can be recommissioned and there is scope to operate points at Craigendoran to split that line onto the northern line which passes to the east of Shandon.”
The oil fuel depot gate at Faslane, previously used only as an exit, will become an inbound gate.
Other ways to alleviate the traffic congestion are also being investigated, including a liftshare scheme.
The idea of reopening the former stations in Rhu and Shandon was raised by the Scottish Greens earlier this year, though the suggestion received a lukewarm response from local residents and the community council.
