FOUR hundred years since their ancestors fought at the head of Glen Fruin, two local clans returned to the area to mark improvements to a cairn which commemorates the battle.
Representatives of the Colquhoun and MacGregor clans met at the site to mark the installation of a new path, seat and information board and a general clearing of undergrowth.
The work improves the view from the cairn and an understanding of one of the most significant events in Scotland’s long history of clan warfare.
In his remarks, Sir Malcolm Colquhoun expressed appreciation of the works carried out and spoke of acquiring a symbolic hatchet to be buried with the MacGregors, 415 years after the battle.
The new path and seat were constructed under the Community Payback Order scheme, at the instigation of Helensburgh Heritage Trust, and carried out by young offenders under the supervision of Bill Freeland and Eddie O’Hara.
The information board has been provided jointly by the Heritage Trust and Luss Estates.
