RHU Amateur football club is celebrating its 120th year this year — and to mark the occasion the club held an Invitational Tournament on Saturday at Ardenconnel Park.
The upcoming 2015/2016 season marks 120 years since Rhu Amateur Football Club’s first ever match against Garelochhead on January 1, 1896.
Current amateur West Cup Holders Greenock High School FP’s and SAFL Premier League side Oban Saints took part in the tournament, and it was Greenock who took the trophy home after winning both their games.
The decision to celebrate this milestone was taken following a particularly tough previous summer, which almost ended in the club disbanding.
Hard work from the committee at the time brought in a new management and group of players to bolster the existing members.
This has seen an exciting revival for Rhu, who finished a respectable fourth in their league campaign last season.
Maintenance to the Old Comrades House (the clubhouse) has taken place over the course of this summer and whilst the majority of the work has been tackled by club members, support has been provided by DCF Joiners and Brican Fabrications.
Despite a typical Scottish Summer’s day bringing a variety of conditions on Saturday, the three teams served up some entertaining matches for the spectators in attendance.
The club would like to thank Babcock and West Coast Cutters for their continued sponsorship, providing the team with a new set of strips and polo shirts, respectively.
A minutes silence was observed before kick-off for long standing Rhu Committee man and fan, George Murdoch, who sadly passed away earlier in the year.
George was involved in the early organisation of the tournament before taking ill and will be sorely missed by all at the club.
The matches will prove to be important preparation for Rhu who begin their competitive campaign in ernest at 2pm on Saturday, they face Corkerhill at home in the opening match of their league cup section.
This is followed by a home match with Bearsden on Wednesday, 6.30pm kick off.
