A WOODLAND on the western edge of Helensburgh has gone on the market - with its current owners stating their support for a community buyout.

Luss Estates Company, which owns Duchess Wood, has listed the 50.68 acre land for sale at offers over £70,000 which has been acknowledged by volunteer group Friends of Duchess Woods.

The native woodland is home to diverse wildlife and also serves as a cherished green space for residents across Helensburgh and Lomond.

Both the volunteer group and business have confirmed they are in support of a community purchase, however, the Friends are not said to be in a position to pursue the option themselves.

The woodland was previously managed by Argyll and Bute Council with the support of the Friends of Duchess Woods.

The ownership was reverted back to Luss Estates in 2021 who have since been managing the woods.

“Our goal is to ensure that this beautiful space continues to be enjoyed by generations to come.”

Duchess Wood has a network of walking trails, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, dog walkers and families.

The woodland is home to a variety of trees, plants, and wildlife, contributing to the area’s ecological diversity.

The woodland is currently managed to support nature conservation, biodiversity and community recreation. It was originally part of the Ardencaple Castle policies, and is believed to be named after Ann, Dowager Duchess of Argyll, the only Duchess to have lived at Ardencaple Castle.

Mr Miller added: “Duchess Woods is an important natural asset to Helensburgh and Rhu.

"It plays a big part in enhancing the lives of local residents.

"Our goal is to ensure that this beautiful space continues to be enjoyed by generations to come, by identifying the best possible future owner.”

Duchess Wood is for sale independently of the playing fields, which will continue to be used by local clubs.

The sale is due to be listed online by goldcrestlfg.com.
