Helensburgh resudents tried out a sport that is making waves across the UK at a local tennis club's special new courts.

More than 50 people came along to the Craighelen Lawn Tennis and Squash Club to play pickleball on new courts specially created for the sport.

In addition, more than 50 children and around 20 adults  came along to try out tennis.

Coach Bob Knox said: “The open day was a great success for both pickleball and tennis.

“There was a lot of interest in pickleball in particular, both from adults and children.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“Pickleball is social, a lot of fun, very easy to learn, and can be played by people of all ages (and fitness levels).

“If you like pickleball, it would be good intro to racket/bat sports in general, like tennis, squash and racketball, which we also play at Craighelen.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“It is also incredibly popular in the USA and Canada and is growing rapidly in popularity in both the UK and mainland Europe - so if you are on holiday, it is very likely that there will be a pickleball court near you.”

Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport which is similar to tennis and table tennis, but has separate rules, paddles, and court dimensions.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

The club has now started regular pickleball lessons, which are held on Mondays at 6pm and Thursdays at 9.30am.

A pickleball club night will be starting on Mondays from 7pm onwards.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

Craighelen also hosts a variety of tennis lessons for different ages and levels.

Details of the club’s full coaching programme can be found on their website: www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/CraighelenLTC.
